What this page answers
Will hair wrap around the brush roll?
Keep a seam ripper in the cupboard whatever you buy. Even the best rolls gather a little at the end caps where the bearing sits.

Our pick for this: Shark PowerDetect Pet PlusFix: Replacement brush roller for stick vacuums
Will the bin fill up halfway through?
If stopping mid-clean annoys you more than the price does, buy the model with a base that empties itself. That is the whole argument for it.
Bin capacities as listed, October 26, 2026.
Our pick for this: Shark PowerDetect Pet PlusFix: Replacement HEPA filter for your vacuum
Is it light enough to carry upstairs?
Full-size uprights are not, which is the whole case for the lift-away design: the pod weighs a fraction of the machine and the pod is what you carry. Cordless sticks are lighter still, though the weight sits in your wrist rather than on the floor.

What to know
Pile depth decides the nozzle
Fur works its way down into pile and knits with the backing. Getting it out takes a roll stiff enough to agitate the fibres plus enough airflow to carry away what comes loose. Suction with no agitation leaves a surprising amount behind.
Why corded still wins on thick carpet
A plugged-in motor pulls harder for longer than a battery, and deep pile is where that gap shows. The top cordless vacuums for carpet have closed much of it, though not all.
Rugs over hard floors are a third case
A heavy upright can bunch a loose rug. Lift-away pods and sticks handle them better, and a rubber broom pulls fur out of a small rug faster than any vacuum.
Check the roll every month
Even an anti-tangle roll collects some hair at the end caps. Two minutes with scissors once a month keeps the pull where it was the day you bought it.
Wool, nylon and the difference it makes
Nylon pile springs back and releases fur fairly easily. Wool holds it, and a stiff roll on wool will fuzz the surface over a few years. If your carpet is wool, run the lowest brush setting that still agitates and use a crevice tool along the edges instead of pushing harder.
Height adjustment matters more than people think
A nozzle set too low on deep pile kills airflow, and airflow is what carries the hair away once the bristles have freed it. If the machine is hard to push and picks up less than it used to, raise the head a notch before you assume the motor is tired.
Questions
What vacuum gets the most pet hair out of carpet?
A corded upright with a stiff roll. The Ball Animal 3 is the pick here.
Are bagged vacuums better for carpet and pets?
For allergy homes, often yes, because the dust stays in a sealed bag. The trade is buying bags. See canisters.
Does carpet need a different brush roll than hardwood?
Yes. Stiff bristles for pile, a soft roller for hard floors. Two-roll nozzles cover both.
Will a robot vacuum clean pet hair from carpet?
It keeps the surface clear. It will not pull fur out of deep pile.
How often should I vacuum carpet with a shedding dog?
Twice a week in the main rooms, daily near the bed if the dog is blowing coat.
Is shampooing carpet better than vacuuming for pet hair?
No. Wet carpet with fur in it mats. Vacuum first, then shampoo for stains.
Does vacuuming daily wear out carpet?
Normal use does not. A nozzle set too low on wool will fuzz it over years.
Why does my carpet still smell of dog after vacuuming?
The smell is usually in the vacuum filter or in the underlay, not the pile.
Do carpet rakes work for pet hair?
On low pile they pull out a surprising amount. On deep pile they tire your arms first.
