What a pet vacuum costs to run

A corded upright costs almost nothing to keep. A cordless stick adds a battery around year three, which ran from under $100 to over $250 in our October scan.

What this page answers

Will the bin fill up halfway through?

Bin size is the specification people skip and then complain about. A litre sounds like a lot until a double-coated dog fills it on the ground floor.

Will it start to smell like the dog?

A monthly rinse of a washable filter stops this before it starts. Two models here add an odour cartridge as a second line of defence.

What will filters and batteries cost later?

A compatible cordless battery ran from under $100 to over $250 in our October 26 scan, depending on model and capacity. A robot parts kit ran $15 to $30. Budget one battery around year three for any cordless stick, plus filters twice a year.

What to know

Where the money actually goes

Filters are a small, regular spend. Rolls are occasional. The battery is the one that stings, and it arrives just when the machine still looks new.

Two-year cost, by type

A corded upright: two filter changes, call it $40 to $60. A cordless stick: the same filters plus a battery towards the end of year three, so $150 to $300 across the first two to three years. A robot: parts kits at $15 to $30 a go, two or three times a year, plus mop pads.

Compatible versus factory parts

Every figure in the table is for a compatible part. Factory packs cost more and carry the maker's warranty. For a machine still under warranty, the factory part is the safer buy.

The number that surprised us

A robot parts kit cost about a fifth of a single cordless battery. People assume robots are the expensive ones to keep. On consumables, the opposite is true.

What makes a battery die early

Heat and a permanently full charge. A stick left on a dock in a sunny hallway ages faster than one stored in a cupboard. Nothing here will double the life of a cell, but it moves the replacement from year three towards year four.

Repair or replace, in numbers

A battery at $100 against a machine at $300 is a clear repair. A battery at $250 against a machine at $450 is a judgement call, and at that point the newer model usually brings a better nozzle as well.

Every figure above is an Amazon list price read on October 26, 2026, for a compatible part rather than a factory one. Two numbers from that scan are worth staring at. The 5,000 mAh V15 pack cost $140 more than the 4,000 mAh pack from the same seller, for 25% more capacity. A robot parts kit ran about a fifth of what a single cordless battery costs, which flips the usual assumption that robots are the expensive pets to keep.

Questions

How much does a Dyson battery cost?

Compatible V11 and V15 packs both listed in the $100 to $150 range on October 26, 2026.

Are vacuum filters a subscription?

No. Wash the washable ones; buy a replacement roughly twice a year.

Which pet vacuum is cheapest to own?

A corded upright, because there is no battery to replace.

Do robot vacuum consumables cost a lot?

Less than people expect. Parts kits ran $15 to $30 in our scan.

Is it worth repairing an old cordless vacuum?

If the only fault is runtime, a battery is far cheaper than a new machine.

Why do prices here have a date on them?

Because Amazon prices move daily. A number with no date is a guess.

Do bags cost more than filters?

Over a year in a shedding home, usually yes, though bags buy you sealed emptying.

Can I wash a HEPA filter that is not labelled washable?

No. Water ruins pleated media that was not built for it.

Is an extended warranty worth it on a vacuum?

Rarely, because the part most likely to fail is the one the warranty excludes.
